Social Mobility – Has Sir John Major a point?

November 12, 2013

As someone who was educated in the State Sector and who has achieved something in his life, I would suggest that our former Prime Minister maybe a bit wide of the mark. I have spent most of the last decade mixing and working with some hugely successful people. What frequently marks them out is that they came from pretty humble beginnings, were fortunate to go to a grammar school ( the scrapping of which being the greatest act of post-war political vandalism that this country has seen), and then they worked hard. Very hard.

My wife came from similar background and again achieved great things, and we were determined that are children  should go to State schools. Again, they are on track for successful careers. What will determine how they and their generation get on is how hard they work and how dedicated they are.
All to often I have met people who have gone to private schools and then Oxbridge. At the age of 23 they are led to belive they have made it. They have not and they will be left behind by those who dedicate themselves.
This comes from someone who went to a Technical School and then a Polytechnic.
